Nivada Grenchen Is Now at Red Army Watches - Here’s Why This Swiss Brand Deserves Your Attention

We Have Something Special in Store: Introducing Nivada Grenchen

At Red Army Watches, we take pride in curating brands that offer genuine substance — watches with real history, real craftsmanship, and real value. Today, we’re excited to introduce our newest addition: Nivada Grenchen. If the name is new to you, it won’t be for long. This Swiss brand is quietly becoming one of the most talked-about names in the watch world, and for good reason.

A Century of Swiss Watchmaking Heritage

Nivada Grenchen is a Swiss watch brand founded in 1926 in Grenchen, Switzerland.  Established in Grenchen, home at the time to other well-known companies like Eterna and Fortis, Nivada never set out to be the most luxurious of manufacturers.  Instead, the brand had a singular, unwavering focus from day one: build watches that work, built for people who actually use them.

The young brand was dedicated to producing precise and highly functional watches, as evidenced by its pioneering work on automatic calibers, water resistance, high accuracy, and chronographs.  By the 1930s, the brand was already making waves — in 1930, Nivada Grenchen was one of the first companies to manufacture automatic watches.

The Golden Era: Tool Watches Built for Explorers

The 1950s and 1960s marked Nivada Grenchen’s most legendary chapter. The brand quickly became known for horological innovation, especially during the 1950s and 1960s, with legendary collections like the Antarctic and the Chronomaster Aviator Sea Diver.

The Antarctic is perhaps the brand’s most storied watch. From 1955 to 1956, U.S. Navy Admiral Richard Byrd led “Operation Deep Freeze,” a military-backed scientific mission to establish permanent bases in Antarctica. Crew members wore Nivada Grenchen watches on the mission, subjecting the timepieces to sub-zero temperatures and all the harsh conditions of polar exploration. By continuing to run reliably and accurately during this period, the Antarctic secured its place in tool-watch history.

Then came the Chronomaster. In 1961, Nivada Grenchen released the Chronomaster Aviator Sea Diver — a multi-purpose tool watch with a chronograph, tachymeter scale, regatta-countdown, and dual-time functions. A utilitarian, sport- and travel-oriented combination rarely seen even today, much less back then.

In 1964, another breakthrough timepiece was introduced — the Depthomatic. It was the first dive watch with a depth gauge, or bathymeter. A year later, the Depthmaster followed — a dive watch that could withstand a pressure of 100 ATM, or 1,000 metres.  By the 1960s, Nivada watches were available in over 80 countries.

The Quartz Crisis and the Long Sleep

The Quartz Crisis of the 1970s reshaped Swiss watchmaking as affordable, highly accurate Japanese quartz watches surged in popularity. Nivada Grenchen, like many Swiss brands, struggled to adapt and saw its business decline. Combined with the 1973 oil crisis, falling demand contributed to the closure of Nivada Grenchen’s production facilities in the late 1970s. Over the following decades, the brand changed hands multiple times and largely disappeared from the market — while vintage Nivada Grenchen watches remained sought after by collectors.

For decades, the brand lived on only in the collections of passionate, in-the-know enthusiasts who recognised what had been lost.

The Revival: Back and Better Than Ever

In 2018, Guillaume Laidet and Rémi Chabrat relaunched Nivada Grenchen, bringing the brand back through faithful reissues of classic designs updated with modern manufacturing techniques. The first releases focused on some of the brand’s most recognizable names: Chronomaster, Antarctic, and Depthmaster.

The response from the watch community was immediate and enthusiastic. Rather than relaunching with entirely new designs, the modern revival focused on reissuing the brand’s most iconic references — and the result bridges the gap between past and present with confidence, delivering mechanical watches that are as enjoyable to wear as they are to admire.

When it comes to accurately re-created vintage-style watches at a circa-$1,000 price point, Nivada Grenchen may well be in a league of its own.  The brand has earned praise from the world’s top watch publications, including Hodinkee, Fratello, and Worn & Wound.
