From the Blue Planet to the Black Star

The CIGA Design × Label Noir Black Star takes the award-winning concept of the Blue Planet beyond Earth, turning its attention towards the darkness and mystery of the cosmos.

Created in collaboration with Swiss customisation studio Label Noir, the Black Star transforms the familiar Blue Planet architecture into a miniature interpretation of a distant galaxy. At the centre of the dial sits a dramatic 8.50mm concave pit inspired by a black hole. Finished with an ultra-light-absorbing Super Black coating, the surface absorbs more than 99% of light, creating the impression of an almost endless void at the heart of the watch.

Around it, blue and white details form a spiralling galaxy, with scattered stars appearing to orbit the darkness at its centre. A luminous polar-star hand moves above the dial, bringing the cosmic concept into the watch's unconventional display of time.

Creating this dial requires an equally unconventional approach. CIGA Design uses CNC micro-machining with diamond-tipped 0.07mm tools, with the engraving process taking approximately six hours. A PEO surface treatment enhances hardness, durability and corrosion resistance, while gradient printing and luminous pigments complete the galaxy-inspired composition.

The Black Star continues the innovative time display developed for the Blue Planet. CIGA Design's Asynchronous-Follow technology allows the hour indication to advance by 30 degrees as the minute indication travels through 390 degrees, allowing hours and minutes to be read through the watch's distinctive single-hand architecture.

Power comes from the Swiss-made CD-04-S automatic calibre. Operating at 28,800 vibrations per hour, the 26-jewel movement provides approximately 41 hours of power reserve while driving CIGA Design's signature Asynchronous-Follow display.

Surrounding the dial is a brushed titanium case treated with a black DLC coating, combining lightness and durability with the darker aesthetic of the Black Star. An anti-reflective sapphire crystal provides a clear view of the intricate dial beneath.

The Black Star builds upon the design language that made the original Blue Planet internationally recognised, including the Blue Planet's 2021 GPHG Challenge Watch Prize. But where the Blue Planet looked towards Earth, the Black Star looks outward — turning the familiar single-hand concept into a darker exploration of gravity, light and the unknown.

CIGA Design: Rethinking How Time Is Displayed

CIGA Design approaches mechanical watchmaking through industrial design, unconventional displays and original movement architecture. Its Blue Planet collection became internationally recognised after winning the Challenge Watch Prize at the Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG) in 2021. The Black Star continues that experimental approach, combining CIGA Design's Asynchronous-Follow time display with the customisation expertise of Label Noir and a new cosmic interpretation of the Blue Planet concept.
