A New Formula for Reading Time

The Shanghai Watch THE BUND Magic Formula challenges the conventional way of displaying time, replacing traditional hour and minute hands with a dynamic mechanical display built around three rotating hour discs.

Each of the three hour discs rotates on its own axis while simultaneously travelling around the dial. As an hour disc reaches the upper section of the display, its angular pointer aligns with the minute scale above, bringing the hour and minute indications together in an intuitive reading of time.

The result is a display that feels almost digital in its immediacy, yet is achieved entirely through mechanical construction.

This version brings an especially technical character to the concept with a semi-transparent black dial. Portions of the mechanism remain visible beneath the darkened surface, adding depth to the display and allowing the architecture responsible for the unusual time indication to become part of the design.

A contrasting white-and-black inner chapter ring defines the upper minute scale, while the time markers feature Swiss Super-LumiNova® for improved visibility in low-light conditions.

The watch is housed in a substantial 43.6mm case crafted from 316L stainless steel and measures 15.5mm thick. Sapphire crystal protects the dial, while a full sapphire crystal exhibition caseback provides another view of the mechanical construction within. Water resistance is rated to 10 bar / 100 metres.

At its heart is Shanghai Watch's FWS-F01 automatic mechanical movement. The 28-jewel calibre operates at 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz) and delivers up to 40 hours of power reserve.

A black leather strap with a quick-release system completes the watch, maintaining the monochromatic character of the case and dial.

By using three independently rotating and orbiting hour discs to display time, the Magic Formula transforms a familiar function into something far less conventional — combining mechanical complexity with a surprisingly intuitive way of reading the hours and minutes.
