A Different Way to Read Time

The Shanghai Watch THE BUND Magic Formula Star Wheel challenges the familiar arrangement of hands and hour markers, replacing them with an unconventional wandering-hours display that turns reading the time into a mechanical spectacle.

At the heart of the design is its skeletonised star-wheel mechanism. Rather than relying on a traditional centrally mounted hour hand, the wandering-hours display allows the hour indication to travel across the dial as time progresses. The result is a constantly changing composition that makes the mechanics of displaying time part of the watch's visual character.

For this version, Shanghai Watch pairs the unusual display with a fresh mint-green dial and matching green leather strap. The colour gives the technically complex design a more contemporary personality while allowing the exposed star-wheel architecture to remain the focal point.

The watch is housed in a 41.5mm case crafted from 316L stainless steel, measuring 13.7mm thick. An anti-reflective curved sapphire crystal protects the display, while a sapphire crystal exhibition caseback provides a view of the movement from the reverse.

Power comes from Shanghai Watch's FWS-F01 automatic mechanical movement. The 28-jewel calibre operates at 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz) and provides up to 38 hours of power reserve.

By abandoning the conventional arrangement of hands for a wandering-hours mechanism, the Magic Formula Star Wheel offers a more playful interpretation of mechanical timekeeping — one where the way time moves across the dial is just as important as the time itself.
