A Different Way to Read Time

The Shanghai Watch THE BUND Magic Formula Star Wheel reimagines the traditional watch display, replacing conventional hour hands with an unconventional wandering-hours mechanism.

At the centre of the design is its skeletonised star-wheel display. Instead of a fixed hour hand rotating around the dial, the hour indication travels across the display as time progresses. This unusual arrangement creates a constantly changing mechanical composition, turning the simple act of reading time into part of the experience.

This version is presented with a silver-grey dial, giving the intricate mechanism a more restrained, technical character. The monochromatic backdrop allows the skeletonised star-wheel construction to take visual priority, revealing layers of mechanical detail while maintaining a clean contemporary appearance.

The watch is housed in a 41.5mm case crafted from 316L stainless steel and measures 13.7mm thick. An anti-reflective curved sapphire crystal provides a clear view of the unconventional display, while a sapphire crystal exhibition caseback reveals the movement from the reverse.

Powering the watch is Shanghai Watch's FWS-F01 automatic mechanical movement. The 28-jewel calibre operates at 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz) and delivers up to 38 hours of power reserve.

A black leather strap completes the design, complementing the silver-grey dial and giving the watch a versatile, understated finish.

By replacing the familiar arrangement of traditional hands with a wandering-hours mechanism, the Magic Formula Star Wheel offers a distinctly different interpretation of mechanical timekeeping — one where the movement of time becomes part of the design itself.
