The Shanghai Watch THE BUND Magic Formula Xuan Yun brings together an unconventional wandering-hours display with a dial inspired by one of the most enduring motifs in Chinese decorative art — the auspicious cloud.

Rather than displaying the hours through a conventional centrally mounted hour hand, the Magic Formula uses a wandering-hours mechanism that allows the hour indication to travel across the dial as time progresses. The constantly changing display transforms reading the time into a mechanical performance.

What distinguishes the Xuan Yun edition is its black mother-of-pearl marquetry dial. Decorated with auspicious-cloud motifs, the dial introduces layers of texture and natural iridescence around the mechanical display. Depending on the angle and light, the mother-of-pearl shifts subtly in tone, giving each view of the watch a different character.

The cloud motif adds another dimension to the design. Deeply rooted in traditional Chinese visual culture, the flowing forms provide an organic contrast to the precise geometry and mechanics of the wandering-hours display.

The watch is housed in a 41.5mm case crafted from 316L stainless steel and measures 13.7mm thick. An anti-reflective curved sapphire crystal provides a clear view of the dial, while a full sapphire crystal exhibition caseback reveals the movement within.

Power comes from Shanghai Watch's FWS-F01 automatic mechanical movement. The 28-jewel calibre operates at 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz) and delivers up to 38 hours of power reserve.

A black leather strap completes the composition, keeping the overall appearance restrained while allowing the mother-of-pearl dial and unusual time display to take centre stage.

By combining wandering hours with mother-of-pearl and traditional cloud imagery, the Magic Formula Xuan Yun brings together contemporary mechanical watchmaking and a distinctly Chinese decorative language.
